Everything You Wanted To Know About Windows... But Didn’t Even Know To Ask.

Why should I consider replacing my old windows?



New windows give your home added beauty, security, and energy efficiency. You will see a significant savings in your energy bill in the very first month after replacing your existing windows with new, energy efficient replacement windows. Is all glass used in replacement windows the same?



No. Special consideration should be given to glass options such as tempered glass, Low-E glass, Argon gas, Krypton gas, and heat mirror. Each option offers various levels of energy efficiency and safety.

What should I look for in a replacement window warranty?



We believe that a manufacturer‘s faith in its own product should be reflected in their product warranty. Simply put, if the manufacturer believes in its own product, that product should have a great warranty. Remember, the warranty is only as valid as the stability of the manufacturer that’s providing it— Marvin Windows has been around since 1912 and we've been here over 40 years.

Are all frames and sashes the same?



No. Most windows are made from four basic materials; Wood, Aluminum, Vinyl and Fiberglass. There are also many hybrid versions such as aluminum or vinyl clad wood, vinyl/wood composites, etc. Each has their pluses and minuses. Vinyl is often lower in cost, but has frequent glass/seal failures and issues relating to air and water infiltration due to warping over time. Wood has a beautiful, aesthetic appearance, but is susceptible to rot and requires the most maintenance. Aluminum is structurally strong, but the worst at the transference of heat and cold from the interior & exterior. Aluminum and Vinyl finishes can fade and dull over time due to exposure to the elements. Fiberglass offers the best of both worlds in that it is structurally superior, maintenance free and will not rot, however, all Fiberglass windows are not created equal. Some have a rough texture and use a gel coat finish. Infinity from Marvin Fiberglass windows and doors are made of Ultrex, which has a smooth, acrylic finish that NEVER requires painting and has the aesthetic design of a wood window.

Which is more important in saving energy, the frame or the glass?



Seventy percent of an average window is glass; therefore, your biggest opportunity to save on energy comes from the glass. Remember, however, that the frame still makes up 30% of the window.

How come your windows aren’t as cheap as those other guys?



Two reasons. Our Installers and quality of products.

One: We do not use subcontracted labor. Many companies pay installers a flat fee of $25-140 per window. From that fee, the subcontractor has to pay for his own business insurance, truck, tools, fuel, helpers, etc. Our installers are company W-4 employees, with liability, workers compensation, health/life insurance benefits, and we provide the truck, tools and equipment to do the job right. In addition, we provide training and standards for doing the job right!

Two: We do not use low cost, low performing products. We have been a family owned business for over 50 years and take pride is using the best products available for your home. We believe in providing products that offer a long-term value rather than a short-term solution. Our Company is our name and we take pride in knowing we are doing the best we can for our customers.

Why do you focus so much attention on the installation of the window?



You pick out the windows. That might seem like the most important part, but that is really only part of the process. Poorly installed windows can have long lasting and dangerous consequences. Windows can allow the heat and cold to penetrate the interior environment of your home. If the window isn’t installed properly, it could affect your heating and cooling bill.

Other companies might give you a “rip-and-stick” job, where they just patch the window into place with some shims, some screws and a whole lot of caulking. This might save on labor, but it will eventually increase your costs much higher than that over a quality window and installation. Over time, the window will let in more and more of the outside temperature forcing you to pay more and more on your energy bills.
